Fellow liberal-left journalists are rubbing their hands together. Not with cold, but with satisfaction. Colombia and Mexico have announced that they will not accept their compatriots expelled from the USA. Thus, Trump’s entire intricately woven plan has burned to the ground! ‘The US cannot treat Colombian migrants in a degrading way,’ the Colombian leader declared. ‘As far as repatriations are concerned, we will always welcome Mexicans returning to our territory with open arms,’ – reads a communiqué from the Mexican Foreign Ministry, while at the same time the country did not allow the plane with the migrants to land. So what is the point?
If you don’t know what it’s about, it’s always about money. If I were President of Mexico, I would also want a gold bar and a USD 5 cheque to be given to each immigrant. A gold bar, because it is well known that Americans do not send angels back, but people ‘with a past’, a criminal past, and some sort of closed sanatorium should be built for them. Someone conscious in their mind will ask, what about the USD 5? And that 5 USD to get the lucky returnees through their first month.
I do not want to worry my fellow journalists, but the countries of Latin America have weak cards in this game and are doomed to take blows and, in the very short term, would be counted on the boards anyway. It has just come to my attention, as I write this, that Colombia has nevertheless agreed – without any restrictions – to accept immigrants deported from the USA. The immigrants are to continue to be brought to Colombia by US military aircraft, something that Bogotá had originally protested against. Now, however, according to Washington, Colombia has agreed to accept military planes with immigrants ‘without restrictions or delays’. Colombian President Gustavo Petro must have been given a calculator or other abacus by some friend. It doesn’t matter what, but it worked out for him that if he put himself in a position to do it, he wouldn’t get out.

The United States has the potential to wait out the resistance of reluctant countries to re-emigrate. If such a Mexico persists in its ‘immigrant heresy’, Washington will rent some island (or several) from the Bantustans and redirect the unwanted visitors there. And then let Mexico worry about what to do with them: whether to bring them home or send them seeds so they can grow their own gardens. The important caveat is that these are not people made for weeding beds!
But I’m not actually talking about the re-emigrants, but about the satisfaction of the camaraderie of the journalists that in the very first few days Trupm’s leg had already been turned up. A joy that boils under the skin and seeks an outlet to bubble to the surface and show the conservative world a Kozakiewicz gesture of exquisite beauty. It is not good for the camaraderie to get so excited, because it may turn out that the Bantustan lies somewhere in the Mazovian sands or in the Warmian-Masurian Lake District, where the Taliban once landed in Klewki. And everyone laughed at the late Andrzej Lepper (including the writer of these words) and now I have to humbly bark under the table. Also, the Mexicans had better accept, because it may turn out that our government for a string of glass beads is ready to undertake some humanitarian mission. Relations between Poland and the USA are like in a marriage, where one person is always right and the other is the husband. And we already know who the wife is in this relationship.
